J Mitch — Exclusive Interview
Pages 44–45 of the print issue
Modesto's J Mitch (formerly Jucealini) on coming up in the mob music era and his EP with Livin Proof.
How did you get your Hip Hop name?
I started rappin’ as a youngster. I was given the name Juce because I was always hyped up when I was bustin. I come from the mob music era so I put the Alini on the end of it, and was known as Jucealini. Now, as a more mature individual, I go by J Mitch.
What city are you from?
Modesto, CA.
Tell us in a couple sentences what was it like growing up there.
It’s a small city where your reputation can get ruined in a split second and not a lot of people have success stories. There’s a lot of hate.
How early did music grab ahold of you? What was your first memorable encounter with music that made you a music junkie?
My pops is from East Side Oakland so coming up around him I was always around music. Keep it real with you: Hammer had us going crazy, Too Short, and Eazy E. One of my boys had a Doggystyle cassette tape he let me borrow for a while — I was hooked. That’s when I knew I was a music junkie!
What was a pivotal time for you growing up in Hip Hop prior to becoming an artist?
Growing up I was always with my crew recording songs in the hood, and even the grown folks would say that I stand out from the rest. Not even to sound full of myself, but even my first time spittin I was lightweight decent lol. They would tell me “bruh you got it”.
Tell us one thing you learned from the Jacka?
Jacka said to make it in this game you have to make people love you no matter what you do — never be corny, I always remember that. I think it’s dope how Jack came from a group, branched off to a solo career, and became legendary. I’m inspired by that.
What made you know and realize that music was going to be a profession for you, or was it a calling?
My love for the music! Not just rappin’, but music period. I loved it. I’ve put out mixtapes, and had group albums, but I feel like rite now I’m taking it [as] a prof[ession] more than ever. I’m working with Livin Proof under Block Bizz and taking all the necessary [steps]…
The scan of this page is partially legible; gaps are marked with […].
[What are you currently working on?]
[I’m] currently working on my project “Dollar And A [Dream]” […]. It’s the first of a [series produced] by Livin Proof. It features Slim […] [San] Quinn to name a few.
One day you will not be here — what kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind?
[Basically] I want to have something that my [family can look back] on and be proud of, and know that [I grinded] and tried [my] best for [my family]… [I want] people to look at me as somebody that […] was here and always kept it [real].
How can people find you?
