Vigils go up Sunday night in San Francisco after the tragic massacre in Orlando, Florida.
For those who don’t know, a 29-year-old Omar Mateen ran into Pulse Night Club on Latin Night this past Sunday at around 2 AM. He released fire and killed over 50 victims and injured the rest of them. Pulse Night Club is a gay club. This act was seen as homophobic but on top of that, Mateen was under watch of the FBI as a possible ISIS agent. It was later told that this act of killing was not, in fact, tied to his religion.
Sunday night in San Francisco’s Castro was dedicated to those lost and their families. Hundreds gathered with flowers, candles and broken hearts to mourn. San Francisco Supervisor, Scott Weiner, held meetings with this LGBT community letting them know that “No act of violence… will keep us from coming together.”
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, addressed the massacre during the annual WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). He called for a moment of silence to honor the victims and teared up as he said “At Apple, we celebrate our diversity. We know that it makes us stronger and moves everyone forward.” He says it was an act of terror and was aimed to divide and destroy.
Cook recently came out in 2014. He’s lent his name and prestige to several gay efforts. Last spring, under Cook’s leadership, Apple announced it was giving $50 million to nonprofits to recruit a more diverse tech workforce. Most recently, in March, Cook and other tech leaders signed letters of disapproval to the North Carolina’s governor over the state’s anti-LGBT law.
