Both the music community and the world are mourning a great loss today. Singer, songwriter and musician Prince Rogers Nelson, known to music lovers just as Prince, was found dead in his Minnesota home at the age of 57. The cause of death is currently under investigation but the impact of his passing can be felt across the globe, as fans take to social media to express their condolences.
Famous for his flamboyant style and unforgettable stage performance, Prince has had an impact on the culture of music for almost four decades. His sound was super eclectic, combining rock, soul, jazz, hip hop, funk and blues to create his signature style. He was also well known for the stand he took against the music industry, fighting for the rights of musicians and refusing to be a “slave” to the record labels. There isn’t a current artist today that hasn’t somehow been influenced by this icon, including your favorite Bay Area artist. Whether you were a fan of Purple Rain, or partied like it was 1999, Prince was the voice of generations.
Speaking of the Bay Area, Prince spent quite a bit of time in our region over the last moments of his cut short life. Just last month Prince was spotted courtside at the Golden State verse Oklahoma City game. In true Prince fashion he gracefully sauntered into the arena and seemed to magically play the role of 6th man, securing the win for the Warriors. He also performed some of his last live shows in the Bay Area; putting on stellar performances to sold out crowds at both the Paramount Theater and Oracle Arena in Oakland. Who knew that would be Bay Area concert goers last time seeing the music legend in the flesh.
All Bay Music Magazine sends condolences not only to Prince’s family, but to the millions of us who loved him. He will truly be missed but through his music he will live on forever. May he rest in peace. @_CourtneyCherry
