Over the past few years biopics have become one of the biggest and most lucrative trends in Hollywood, but this one has the potential to be an instant classic. Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, will portray Colombian drug “queenpin” Griselda Blanco in an upcoming film titled The Godmother, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Eva Sørhaug.
From the 1970’s to the early 1980’s the Medellín Cartel, fathered by the notorious “King of Cocaine” Pablo Escobar, was estimated to have supplied between 84 to 90 percent of cocaine in the United States, and 80 percent in the entire world. Within this male dominated criminal organization, Blanco rose to the highest ranks of the cartel, becoming one of the world’s most violent and fearsome drug lords.
Blanco’s life, which was largely spent on the run from authorities, rivals and eventually her own cartel members, along with Zeta-Jones’ acting prowess should make The Godmother a strong contender come Oscar time. The film will begin shooting early next year. Check back with The Source as more information on the film becomes available.
